My Quest for Insanity in 37 Days

Posted on November 5, 2010 by . Character Updates

I’m sure most people know by now that the fate of the Insane in the Membrane Feat of Strength still remains up in the air after BlizzCon this year. Many people would say that its fate has been sealed, and you just won’t be able to get it after Cataclysm (baring any extreme circumstances, like the one given in the blue post below).

Insane in the Membrane is a feat of strength, not an achievement. Feats are things that you can’t be guaranteed to complete, which is why they’re feats and not achievements. Most of them are actually now impossible to complete, and this feat will join a long list of “you had to be there” moments in WoW time.

The feat isn’t being removed of course, those who have it will retain it, however; some of the requirements are, so it will no longer be able to be completed by anyone who has not already done so.

It’s possible that in some very specific situations where someone has completed the reputations which are being removed, but not others that will still be in the game, that it can still be completed. But it’s something we’re waiting for clarity on, and will let you know as soon as we do.

When I heard the news watching the BlizzCon stream, I felt pretty bad for those people who had been working on the Feat. As an obsessive compulsive achievement getter myself, I can only imagine what the news felt like (I have close to the same feeling knowing several title achievements are being removed in Cataclysm that I’ll never get). What I didn’t know is that in about a week I would be joining the ranks of aspiring Insane people.

I’m not sure what prompted me to start this late. It could have been I had just spent my weekend farming for a Tiny Crimson Whelpling (which I got after two days of farming). Then on November 1 I had begun farming for the Disgusting Oozling, then at about midnight I had an epiphany – I am a glutton for punishment and god awful farming and grinding. I immediately thought of the Insane title, and then quickly thought there was no way I could come close to getting it with so little time. Of course, I did already havemy Goblin reputations at exalted, which is a big chunk of it. So with that extra motivation, I drew up a time line of how to get this stuff all done before Cataclysm. It’s an ambition one if I do say so myself, but the challenge is what makes this stuff fun.

Insane in the Membrane Time Line

  • 1st – 5th: Bloodsail Buccaneers
  • 6th – 13th: Shen’dralar
  • 14th – 18th: Ravenholdt – Syndicate Mob Farming
  • 19th – 23rd: Level a Rogue to 60
  • 24rd – 29th: Ravenholdt – Heavy Junkboxes

I started doing some research about what reputations where being affected in Cataclysm. I found that Bloodsail, Shen’dralar, and Ravenholdt were the ones most up in the air. Shen’dralar being the worst of the three. I decided to start with Bloodsail because they seemed to be the easiest. As you can see by my time line above, I a lotted five days for them. Which (thankfully) was a gross overestimate on my part, because I ended up finishing Bloodsail reputation in about five hours.

Since then I’ve been working on Shen’dralar, and currently have 32 librams, and 26 diamonds (out of 84). Thats after about three days of buying and farming. This weekend will be a pivotal point in whether or not I can get them done in time. As for Ravenholdt, I’ve read that on the beta Heavy Junkboxes can still be looted, and the turn in NPC for them still exists. Which is why I’m saving them for later. The Darkmoon Faire is my very last reputation because I don’t believe there is any risk of it being removed in Cataclysm. Whether or not this is a foolish assumption remains to be seen.

I will continue to provide updates as I hit large milestones. I do believe that when it’s all said and done I will be more than worthy of such a title, and I can’t see there being another title I’ll wear in place of it for quite some time.
